Reminded me of OST somehow...
"All week, I’ve found myself remembering what you said to David Cayley
about “the realm of gratuity, or gift,” and how hard it can be for the
modern mind to grasp.1
https://dougald.substack.com/p/a-gift-received#footnote-1 When something
happens, we expect it to be “the outcome either of chance or of some chain
of causal necessity.” But between these two, there is “a realm that comes
into being in response to a call, rather than a determinative cause.” When
something begins with an invitation, rather than an order. (In the sense of
an officer bellowing at a recruit or a boss sending an email to an
underling or a customer clicking “BUY NOW” on a website.)
Today, if we say something is “gratuitous” that means it is “beside the
point”, but once upon a time the world itself was understood to be
gratuitous: the result of something like an invitation, rather than random
chance or an unbendable law of cause-and-effect."

Does it mean that OST is not so much about 'Self Organization"? There is a
concious invitation from a leader, someone and there is an underlined
"Theme"....

Dear ost Afficionados and other Critters,
*"Does it mean that OST is not so much about 'Self Organization"?"
*as Funda Oral Toussaint asked, tickled my old brain.
A quick search dug up an old text of Harrison Owen (Opening Space for
Ermeging Order?)
(Opening Space fro Emerging Order: A brief history of Open Space. First
published in the OD Practitioner it is suggested that the remarkable
things that happen in Open Space have nothing to do with the magic of
Open Space, but rather the prior reality of self-organizing systems.)
here are two short parts of the text:
/Now back to Open Space. If it turns out that the global experience of
thousands of people in an open space environment is something other than
a massive aberration, it would seem that self-organization in the realm
of human systems was an every day occurrence. It is in this light that I
choose to view the significance of Open Space Technology. It is not
about having better meetings, although that certainly takes place. *It
is about experiencing the mystery and power of self-organization to the
end that we might learn to be at home in this rather strange, possibly
new, universe *(to borrow the title of Kaufmann’s book).
/*and
*/The lesson from Open Space is a simple one. The only way to bring an
Open Space gathering to its knees is to attempt to control it. It may,
therefore, turn out that the one thing we always wanted (control) is not
only unavailable, but unnecessary. After all, if order is for free we
could afford being out of control and love it. Emergent order appears
in Open Space when the conditions for self organization are met.
Perhaps we can now relax, and stop working so hard.
/Love and Peace from a sunny morning in Berlin

"Emergent order appears in Open Space when the conditions for self
organization are met."
*In my experience with OST, *"the conditions required for self
organization" for emergent order change from culture
*to culture (history, how the society functions, all these play a role) *.
- People need* to be safe and respected* to feel free. Enough time should
be given too (for an OST event).
I agree Control can not be considered as a Condition. I doubt that there
are unique conditions that can be applied all over the world.
That's what Harrison was right saying: "a good person can work with OST, it
does not belong to me, it can not be certified"
Every individual in this list can experience freedom and emergent order
with a little Consciousness and Awareness. However
that is sufficient to create harmony and love we need to experience in
society.
Thanks Harrison for this Wisdom🙏

We dont need Ooen Space to experience emergence. It is happening all around
us at every time.
We use Ioen Space when that emergence is producing order that we want to
address directly, usually in the form of a problem or something that we
need to change.
The. We introduce a theme and a process and some time constraints and a
group of people into the emergent space of life and see if we can address
the issue.
What happens in Open Space is sel-organization within chosen constraints.
It is deliberately introducing some order to influence what is happening in
the wider context.
Harrison is right that we don't have to work so hard. But we do have to
work.
Chris.

In my opinion, thats the only way for human systems to thrive.
In my active work with ost from 1996 to 2012 every gathering in any
culture, in any situation, in any language, in any... was a success when
the prerequisites were in place.
In 1996 and 1997 I read Harrisons Guide before I worked with ost... 20
times.
I began to do one thing less and occasionally added something.
In 2010, two years before I retired, Georg Bischoff and I published
" Meine open space Praxis", 280 pages, 100 pictures.
On August 5, 1999 I informed the LIST on starting a new project at age 59
and placed that email on page 9 of the book of 2010... have a look.
Have a great day wherever you are
