You are great Michael! I am so happy to have your book here, in Stuttgart,
with me and be able to show it to my german speaking friends.

As soon as I came across to OST, I knew that it functions from the Dinner
Table of my Aunt (in Turkey) and from crowded family meetings of my
kindheit.

When i came across OST i felt at home and could combine with my universty
studies of Business, my job and life experiences.

I have facilitated many OST gatherings in Turkey  and a few in Germany and
many online since 2008.

Once, a close friend of mine in İstanbul, a business man asked me: "Funda,
tell me what is the difference between our gatherings around a dinner table
with Raki?". This made me laugh.

Yes, he has right. OST has the capacity to bring the friendship climate to
the meetings of humankind (eye level communication, inclusion, freedom) and
sound decision making opportunities.

regards to all of my great colleagues and friends in the list,

Regards,
Funda

In my active work with ost from 1996 to 2012 every gathering in any

the prerequisites were in place.

In 1996 and 1997 I read Harrisons Guide before I worked with ost... 20
times.
I began to do one thing less and occasionally added something.
In 2010, two years  before I retired, Georg Bischoff and I  published

I bet  HO arrived at several insights during or after the two Martinis
on his porch...
such as /"Never Work Harder than You Have to"/, which eventually was
characteristic
for us as "peace makers" and was enriched by
/Don't Fix it If it Ain't Broke
Never Delude Yourself into Thinking You Are in Control

/(See /The Practice of Peace /pages 125-130)

It is probably a prerequisite for us to be totally present and invisible in
our role when we accompany an ost event... (not facilitate)...

Greeting from Berlin

I think the last time I saw Harrison in person we were drinking bourbon on Peggy Holman’s porch and he may also have been smoking a cigar.  There is a pattern emerging here.

Bourbon?? The only thing I remember Harrison drinking was gin!  I vaguely remember the cigars. Just took a look at my calendar. It was in February 2008.  We were all younger then. :-}

I fell in love with Open Space the first time I saw it in action. It was a 2.5 day Open Space at U S WEST done by Harrison in Arizona with 250 people from all parts and levels of the company. The state was solving for outages that occurred because of flooding. What I saw over that time were the needs of individuals and of the whole system could be met. I didn’t know that was possible until that gathering. Now I use it as an indicator of breakthrough. I had a filmmaker at the event who created a 16 minute video https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/25251316 that has a nice interview of Harrison interspersed. The experience sent me on a quest to discover the “secret sauce” in which innovation happens. That’s what inspired me to gather all these different systemic/high participation change methods into The Change Handbook https://bkconnection.com/products/9781523088126_the-change-handbook. It let me look across them all. When the second edition grew of 18 to 61 methods, it drove me nuts. So I wrote Engaging Emergence: Turning Upheaval into Opportunity  https://bkconnection.com/products/9781605095219_engaging-emergence?_pos=1&_psq=Peggy+ho&_psid=95959aede&_ss=eto articulate my view of that secret sauce. Then I found a simpler way to characterize what I see as the heart of how we create conditions where groups dealing with complexity or conflict emerge with novel insights, stronger, deeper relationships, and paths forward and published it as an article in the Organization Development Review: Emergent Design for Generative Change https://substack.com/home/post/p-155264757. Engaging Emergence is still the deep dive.

Thanks for starting these reflections Michael.

Looking forward to seeing those who are coming to WOSonOS in The Netherlands in about a week!

All,

I've been lurking in this conversation (and the parallel one with the Hylo
and Open Space topic) for quite awhile now. I was always hoping that Chris
Corrigan would weigh in because he has taught me so much about Cynefin and
constraints and leading in complex spaces (pretty much all human social
and/or political interactions that are about change involve complex spaces,
it would seem). And then he did!

And then I wanted him to say more (Chris?), especially about constraints
and how they influence what emerges and what iterates and replicates.
Chris, if I got this right, you have suggested that on the unpredictable
side of the Cynefin framework, that is, in complex spaces, one tends to
need more enabling constraints, looser constraints that enable the
emergence or new orders, and that on the predictable, but not necessarily
yet known, side, the complicated space, one tends to need more governing
constraints, slightly tighter to help with the iteration and improvement of
things that have emerged but need more structure to become good practices.

This seems to me to be a great way to talk about the difference between the
processes in Open Space and in the Hylo systems that Tony describes. I
think the laws of Open Space are a really good example of enabling
constraints, and the structures and processes of Hylo seem to be great
examples of governing constraints. And I'm not meaning to make some hard
and fast dichotomies here; first of all the boundaries between complex and
complicated are highly permeable and always fluctuating. Second, this is a
dance of pattern emergence and pattern replication, and that seems to
suggest that the dance is always back and forth. Chris? Would you like to
elaborate?

Chris also talked about patterns and constraints in this blog
https://www.chriscorrigan.com/parkinglot/patterns-and-constraints/ that I
love. And in his really deep and cool intensive workshop with Caitlin
Frost, Working in complexity inside & out
https://www.harvestmoonconsultants.com/complexity-inside-out.html, where
they explore the processes of leading work on identifying and shifting
patterns, using constraints, which I have somewhat simplified (forgive me,
Chris, if this is mistaken, but I've seen it work so well, I have to lay it
out, and you can correct me if it's too simplified) into, first, connect
people (in purposeful networks), then encourage exchanges among them,
then facilitate their forming through attractors (emergent orders) of
smaller clusters to work together on something, then support their forming
an identity around that work, and then help them create some
semi-permeable boundaries around it to protect the work as it evolves.
This seems like the movement that Tony might have been imagining when he
wrote his piece about Open Space and Hylo. The first three or so of these
constraints clearly could describe an Open Space gathering. The last two
could describe the Hylo process. And there is a very blurry space
in-between, and always the possibility of that dance back and forth I
described above.

Anyone want to comment or continue the discussion? I am so curious to hear
what you all think!

I fell in love with Open Space the first time I saw it in action. It was a
2.5 day Open Space at U S WEST done by Harrison in Arizona with 250 people
from all parts and levels of the company. The state was solving for outages
that occurred because of flooding. What I saw over that time were the needs
of individuals and of the whole system could be met. I didn’t know that was
possible until that gathering. Now I use it as an indicator of
breakthrough. I had a filmmaker at the event who created a 16 minute video
https://vimeo.com/manage/videos/25251316 that has a nice interview of
Harrison interspersed. The experience sent me on a quest to discover the
“secret sauce” in which innovation happens. That’s what inspired me to
gather all these different systemic/high participation change methods into The
Change Handbook
https://bkconnection.com/products/9781523088126_the-change-handbook. It
let me look across them all. When the second edition grew of 18 to 61
methods, it drove me nuts. So I wrote Engaging Emergence: Turning
Upheaval into Opportunity

articulate my view of that secret sauce. Then I found a simpler way to
characterize what I see as the heart of how we create conditions where
groups dealing with complexity or conflict emerge with novel insights,
stronger, deeper relationships, and paths forward and published it as an
article in the Organization Development Review: Emergent Design for
Generative Change https://substack.com/home/post/p-155264757. Engaging
Emergence is still the deep dive.

Thanks for starting these reflections Michael.

When i came across OST i felt at home and could combine with my universty

I have facilitated many OST gatherings in Turkey  and a few in Germany and
many online since 2008.

Once, a close friend of mine in İstanbul, a business man asked me: "Funda,
tell me what is the difference between our gatherings around a dinner table
with Raki?". This made me laugh.

Yes, he has right. OST has the capacity to bring the friendship climate to
the meetings of humankind (eye level communication, inclusion, freedom) and
sound decision making opportunities.

In my active work with ost from 1996 to 2012 every gathering in any

In 1996 and 1997 I read Harrisons Guide before I worked with ost... 20

I began to do one thing less and occasionally added something.
In 2010, two years  before I retired, Georg Bischoff and I  published

All, I've been lurking in this conversation (and the parallel one with the Hylo and Open Space topic) for quite awhile now. I was always hoping that Chris Corrigan would weigh in because he has taught me so much about Cynefin and constraints and leading in complex spaces (pretty much all human social and/or political interactions that are about change involve complex spaces, it would seem). And then he did! And then I wanted him to say *more* (Chris?), especially about constraints and how they influence what emerges and what iterates and replicates. Chris, if I got this right, you have suggested that on the unpredictable side of the Cynefin framework, that is, in complex spaces, one tends to need more *enabling* constraints, looser constraints that enable the emergence or new orders, and that on the predictable, but not necessarily yet known, side, the complicated space, one tends to need more *governing* constraints, slightly tighter to help with the iteration and improvement of things that have emerged but need more structure to become good practices. This seems to me to be a great way to talk about the difference between the processes in Open Space and in the Hylo systems that Tony describes. I think the laws of Open Space are a really good example of enabling constraints, and the structures and processes of Hylo seem to be great examples of governing constraints. And I'm not meaning to make some hard and fast dichotomies here; first of all the boundaries between complex and complicated are highly permeable and always fluctuating. Second, this is a dance of pattern emergence and pattern replication, and that seems to suggest that the dance is always back and forth. Chris? Would you like to elaborate? Chris also talked about patterns and constraints in this blog <https://www.chriscorrigan.com/parkinglot/patterns-and-constraints/> that I love. And in his really deep and cool intensive workshop with Caitlin Frost, Working in complexity inside & out <https://www.harvestmoonconsultants.com/complexity-inside-out.html>, where they explore the processes of leading work on identifying and shifting patterns, using constraints, which I have somewhat simplified (forgive me, Chris, if this is mistaken, but I've seen it work so well, I have to lay it out, and you can correct me if it's too simplified) into, first, *connect* people (in purposeful networks), then encourage *exchanges* among them, then facilitate their forming through *attractors* (*emergent orders)* of smaller clusters to work together on something, then support their forming an *identity* around that work, and then help them create some semi-permeable *boundaries* around it to protect the work as it evolves. This seems like the movement that Tony might have been imagining when he wrote his piece about Open Space and Hylo.
