My first memory of meeting Harrison was at the Leadership in a
Self-Organizing World open space in the mountains east of Seattle,
Leavensworth in 2009. His work had already transformed my life, hopes
and aspirations - though I'd only learned about OST two years earlier.
It wasn't long before I was on the board of the OSI-US, though I was
worried about the aphorism, those who love law and sausages should not
see them made. The most profound impact of Harrison's work has only been
in these later years, as I started to understand what Harrison was
trying to tell me about me working too hard, that all the space was
already opened. We just need to notice.

I recall how he spoke enthusiastically, wishing he had decades more time
to work on his intuitions about Grief work that were very present in his
books, especially his last, Wave Rider, which was being promoted at the
Leadership in a Self-Organizing World in 2009. I sat at a table in the
cafeteria of International House in NYC, mostly star struck, hearing him
speak about how he wished he had more time to go in depth on Grief
during an Opening Space for Peace and High Performance in NYC. I sense
what he was really doing was inviting us to take on the project.

For what it's worth, I'm very much sensing that Harrison's work is more
present, and brighter, now that Harrison has left this mortal plane.
Some of his last writings sent to the OSList, like the one just a month
before his passing, After the Rage, were some of his most sharp and
poignant pieces. The love showed and expressed, and was reflected back
to him at his last talk from the most recent Peace & High Performance in
January, to me very much confirm that Harrison is opening more space
now, and will continue to do so, than he could possibly do while his
spirit was fixed in time and space.

We love you, Harrison!

Barry was back on the job this morning, in a way, honoring his

In 1997 a colleague and fellow leadership coach from the 'Council for Excellence in Government' and I were having lunch at the Glen Echo Inn just outside Washington DC. We were discussing how exciting and successful the previous day's Open Space for 200 federal government leaders had been; our first exposure.

A courtly gentleman dressed in black politely approached us and asked if we were referring to Open Space Technology. Of course, it was Harrison, who lived close by. He joined us for the rest of the afternoon and was delighted to learn that the feds had wholeheartedly embraced the experience and were in action to

implement the session outcomes.

That experience was the first of probably over 100 OST events for me as a participant and more often as a (so-called!) 'facilitator'.

As with all of you in this treasured community OST has been and continues to

be a personal and professional blessing. It always works!

How appropriate that my next one (here in Black Mountain NC) has a theme of "Practicing Love".

Harrison taught us all how to do that by being and sharing his love.

With Much Love and Gratitude to All -

With deepest sympathy as we remember Harrison Owen.

We were fortunate to have the opportunity to welcome Mr. Harrison to Japan and have him teach us directly when Open Space Technology was still unknown in our country. We think back on those days as if they were yesterday.

We are truly grateful for his spirit, insight, and most of all, for the tremendous influence his being has had on Japanese practitioners. We hope to continue to live the principles of Open Space.

Please rest in peace.

THE SPACE IS ALWAYS OPEN

At 88, yesterday, March 16, 2024, Harrison Owen has left us, the "initiator" of the Open Space Technology as he humbly and modestly liked being called. His legacy is immense and now the world community of practitioners of this fabulous method of dialogue will be in charge of carrying forward their dreams. My heart is full of thanks and without a doubt that the path he leaves us is full of light and hope.

All,

This for me, adds to the very real sense, that we are in a time of profound change.

• My own father passed in December.
• My wife was diagnosed with ALS in February...
• Harrison who I had a chance to meet passes in March.
• What’s next?...

Whatever happens is the only thing that could have happen.  Prepared to be Surprised….

Thank You Harrison and so many others for the gift of open space.  When the time is right, I look forward to joining you all for a memorial open space reflecting on the past but looking toward the future.

Every day without you here, Harrison, reminds me of how much you've touched
our lives. Your kindness, understanding, and our journey together keep your
spirit alive in us.
Thinking about life, I find comfort in Rumi's poetry, a favorite of yours.
He said, "Don't grieve. Anything you lose comes round in another form."
Harrison, you were a blessing and a source of hope for us all. Your light
continues to lead us, just as Rumi suggested, inspiring us to spread
kindness, wisdom, and connection in your memory. Let's carry the spark you
left in us and keep it burning bright.

Harrison is one of the Immortals now.

Here's a favorite memory of the man in the hat before a morning circle
opening, from the 2009 gathering that Harold mentioned:

With profound thankfulness for HO's vast grand adventure of a life and his
unbounded generosity and vision and welcome,
and warm condolences to Harrison's beloved family;
and so touched by Barry's letter and by all of you, your beautiful
expressions of gratitude, friendship, grief and love.
