What does this list mean to us now?

Thanks, everyone who has replied so far. I hope friends old and new continue to bring their thoughts to the conversation.

What I’ve heard so far about why we value this list…

  • a community of colleagues old and new,
  • a place for learning from each other,
  • a cornerstone of the practice of Open Space,
  • a culture of generosity,
  • access to a rich history and lots of stories,
  • a form that is easily accessible to all.

I think of it as a place to call home for this far-flung network.

On the technology, my thought is there’s no one way. As Chris pointed out, this list provides broad accessibility and I suspect will continue to exist as long as it does that. And, as John suggests, new technologies provide new ways to connect.

Michael Herman, who created openspaceworld.org as a Wiki when that was a new collaborative technology, wrote me to say that the OSLIST FAQ lives there now:
https://openspaceworld.org/wp2/oslist/

In it are listed other online Open Space groups, including in languages other than English. I think the Facebook and LinkedIn groups are reasonably active.

The structures of this Open Space community — the openspaceworld.org  website, this list, WOSonOS, the other online groups and networks, the Open Space Institutes — exist because someone had an idea and others joined them to make it happen and keep it vital. All of it continues to evolve as needs arise.

In the spirit of taking responsibility for what you love, if there are some who wish to set up a video-based network, go for it! I don’t know if it’s a fit but someone could even explore Open Space Village as a platform. Or Mighty Networks. It looks like there’s some interest to give it a go. Put out an invitation if you have the desire to make it happen.

I suspect there’s more to say…who else has a reflection on what this list means to them?

Appreciatively,
Peggy

Yes, attending a WOSonOS is a good idea.
You probably are aware of this years WOSonOS in Istanbul

When you look at the "co-invitors"

you will see some of the colleagues in our OSLIST that are in the LIST from the start...
and some of them are in your list of  "Our Team" such as Peggy Holman, Village Seattle Co-Founder...

Wishing you all the best for your village project kicking off in two weeks!

I hope to get to know some of you on this list somehow... maybe even attend a WOSonOS!

Also, I just want to share that our project (VillageCo) is bringing open space into neighborhoods throughout the US and the world as part of our Village Gathering Model aimed at building local connections.  Our first pilot project is launching soon  https://www.villageco.org/buildersand we have a group conducting research to help us co-learn and evolve.  Will certainly share what we learn and what emerges!

Deeply appreciate your support, Peggy, and Michael, (and Harrison - still with us in spirit) - we move forward from your wisdom and example.

Hi Peggy and all,

It means access to wisdom and support, and a certain culture.

Even if it was no more, for me it serves a watermark of what generosity can be in a community of practice. Just this morning I mentioned it to a friend – a culture where a first-timer has had reflections and stories from the most experienced (in the world), sometimes within a matter of hours. This is what impressed me from my start.

Thanks for starting this, Peggy. I have described the OSLIST many times as,
for me, the extension of the active exploring and supporting that started
on the MetaNet platform. I came to that in 1996 but was able to read every
conversation back to 1991. For sure that was some of the deepest fastest
learning of my life. OSLIST is where that continued. And where I have
continued to make payments, if you will, for that learning.

I’ve described the list as a 24/7 helpline, with a global staff on call.
Can’t sleep the night before (or night after) your first OS meeting,
operators are on duty ready to advise, encourage or debrief. It’s hundreds
of colleagues globally, whose conversation has always been informed and
tempered by 100 or so of us gathering annually. OSONOS always seemed like
the place some of us remembered how to talk with each other, go deep, and
then brought that way of connecting back to the rest of us.

To the suggestion of video, that could absolutely fit right into the mix,
between the list and OSONOS. Tricia Chirumbole ran something like that for
years, weekly. For me, earlier, the monthly OSI board call was another
regular touchstone. But ANYONE can simply post a time, a zoom link and a
question. Open a little video space. The right people will show up , and so
on. As we say, you don’t need to be the expert, it’s enough to bring the
question.

More than anything, especially for those who feel new to this game, I would
underscore the comments about generosity. That’s been the lifeblood of OS
and OSLIST and all our other gatherings. Don’t wait for somebody to do the
thing you think we need. Jump in and give it in your own way.  Post it. Try
it.  There’s no central committee passing out roles and tasks. It’s a
community experiment unfolding new all the time. Give it a nudge in
whatever direction feels good and important to you. (Not cuz Harrison said
so in the Users Guige, but because it’s the only way this can possibly
work!).

My own contribution is to try and keep a decent inventory of such
contributions. That’s all openspaceworld.org has ever wanted to be. Stuff
that seems to work bubbles up there over time, but the OSLIST is where lots
of things have started.  Which is why what Chris says is important.
OSLIST means nobody has any excuses for not learning, not asking, not
contributing!  <grin>

Peggy, I just love your idea of Village Open Space!  A place to nurture
connections with others in the Open Space community.  I consider our
Village model to be a more organic (live & alive) alternative to
asynchronous platforms like Mighty Networks (or email).

I'd love to give it a try!! I'll host a virtual Open Space Village-Style
Gathering - folks can experience it and if there's interest in holding them
regularly.

I'll have some availability in October or November and will circle back
with a date & time when it gets closer.  If anyone is interested in helping
out with this, please do reach out!

Thanks, everyone who has replied so far. I hope friends old and new

As Chris pointed out,
this list provides broad accessibility and I suspect will continue to exist
as long as it does that. And, as John suggests, new technologies provide
new ways to connect.

Michael Herman, who created openspaceworld.org as a Wiki when that was a
new collaborative technology, wrote me to say that the OSLIST FAQ lives
there now:
https://openspaceworld.org/wp2/oslist/

In it are listed other online Open Space groups, including in languages
other than English. I think the Facebook and LinkedIn groups are reasonably
active.

The structures of this Open Space community — the openspaceworld.org
website, this list, WOSonOS, the other online groups and networks, the
Open Space Institutes — exist because someone had an idea and others joined
them to make it happen and keep it vital. All of it continues to evolve as
needs arise.

In the spirit of taking responsibility for what you love, if there are
some who wish to set up a video-based network, go for it! I don’t know if
it’s a fit but someone could even explore Open Space Village as a platform.
Or Mighty Networks. It looks like there’s some interest to give it a go.
Put out an invitation if you have the desire to make it happen.

I suspect there’s more to say…who else has a reflection on what this list
means to them?

Appreciatively,
Peggy

Also, I just want to share that our project (VillageCo) is bringing open

Hello All,
Even though I am not able to keep up with all the posts on this list and it
is rare that I post anything, the list remains precious to me. I have
subscribed many years ago (probably in 2004 or so) and it was only in 2022
in Bilbao that I experienced my first Open Space and first WOSonOS. All
those years prior, the list acted as a reminder that there was something
out there that I needed to delve into. After all it is said that Open Space
is not learned but remembered. My trip in Bilbao was truly transformative
and helped me among other things to notice that self organisation is
everywhere. Today, I am once again engulfed in a whirlpool of projects and
work where OST is sadly absent. The list still acts as this little voice at
the back of my head saying "don't you forget about Open Space...". And once
in a while I take the time to read through a thread. Like this one.
Inevitably I will find a nugget of inspiration like the Village Co idea. I
have been toying with the idea of hosting a OS event in my Village here in
France. Not sure why or what it would be about but the post brought back
this idea to the forefront. It's nagging, but in a good way.
I will add that generosity is indeed a central characteristic of this list.
Each time I had a question or gave some insight I received some wonderful
feedback.
Regarding technology, I like the old fashion, low tech listserv. It works.
It does not preclude having other platforms as well. Let's not forget the
first rule of engineering : "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"
Cheers to all

Thanks for the question, Peggy!

What does this list mean to you now?

To me it is comforting to know that you are all here on OSLIST. Both the old firekeepers and the new curious, hungry 'newbies'.
This space is to me almost sacred compared to the other spaces we have on social media. It feels more private and intimate.
Posting on OSLIST is a bit like going into the center of the circle. It takes passion and reaponsibility.
The wisdom in the circle is vaaast!
Thanks

Ämne: [OSList] What does this list mean to us now?

Hi all,

My response to Michael a few minutes ago had me reflecting on the past. I have also been wondering about our present and future. Specifically:

What does this list mean to us now?

Particularly with Harrison’s passing, I wondered what are our needs today?

When the list began in 1996, it was pretty quiet. Over the first 6 months or so, someone posted an occasional question or story. And then, as our numbers grew, the flood gates opened. Stories, questions, poetry, deep dives into the principles and law, and so much more filled our inboxes for years.  Around 41,000 messages have been sent over the last 28 years. (See the archiveshttps://oslist.org/empathy/list/everyone.oslist.org.) We were there for each other, generous with our stories, willing to ask questions and learn. For example, I did a 2,100 person Open Space in 2001https://peggyholman.com/papers/articles/good-work-for-2100-colombian-street-kids/ just outside Bogota, Colombia. I had the confidence to do it in part because Harrison and Michael Pannwitz ran one that size and wrote about it on the list.

Over the last few years, the list has been quieter. We’re almost 1,800 people. That got me thinking that many may be quiet because they aren’t sure of the etiquette of the list.

What would it take for anyone who wishes to do so to feel welcome to post?

As long-time participant who has been here since the first post and wants to see this list remain a vital resource to this world-wide community, my thought is to put out a question that anyone here could opt to answer:

What does this list mean to you now?

I figure if enough of us respond, we’ll discover what the list means to us now.

I’m happy to share my answer but prefer to just put out the question for the moment to invite anyone who cares to offer their thoughts on what they want from this list now.

If you feel moved to offer something, it is a gift to us all.

Warmly,
Peggy

Thank’s for the question Peggy!

I remember the first time I posted something to the list - AND I got answers more or less immediately ! There is always someone that is up and it’s always daytime somewhere so the answers comes quickly. To me the list was and is a place for comfort  where I can put questions, thoughts out in the ”air” and it always lands in good soil.  So I can echo all the values below as well. Also for private reasons I know that there is always someone to help where ever  in the world I am.

Thankful

Appreciatively,
Peggy

Dear Jason,

looking at your Village Gathering Model I remembered that Harrison Owen drew on his experience of what we now would call an "open space" gathering (totally selforganized)

Greetings from Berlin that grew out of two dozend villages...

Thankful

Hello all,

It is the first time that I write to this list, so i am not sure on whether
it will work or not, but “whatever happens is the only thing that could
happen”

Though I am new to this list, since I am exploring Open Space, I have been
following it during the last months closely!

To me so far means a place where part of the spirit of open space is, and
has been helping me getting courage, knowledge, stenght, among others!

Tomorrow I co facilitate my first Open Space in a long time, and your
comments and energy have been of great help!

I see also this list as a point of connection between practitioners, though
i believe i cannot call myself one!

Greetings from Denmark!

Un saludo / Best Regards / Med Venlig Hilsen

Thank’s for the question Peggy!

I remember the first time I posted something to the list - AND I got
answers more or less immediately ! There is always someone that is up and
it’s always daytime somewhere so the answers comes quickly. To me the list
was and is a place for comfort  where I can put questions, thoughts out in
the ”air” and it always lands in good soil.  So I can echo all the values
below as well. Also for private reasons I know that there is always someone
to help where ever  in the world I am.

Thankful
:o)

Thanks, everyone who has replied so far. I hope friends old and new
continue to bring their thoughts to the conversation.

Appreciatively,
Peggy

Dear Jason,

looking at your Village Gathering Model I remembered that Harrison Owen
drew on his experience of what we now would call an "open space" gathering

in a village while in Africa for the Peace Corps.

Yes, attending a WOSonOS is a good idea.
You probably are aware of this years WOSonOS in Istanbul

https://wosonos2024.istanbul/

When you look at the "co-invitors"

https://wosonos2024.istanbul/co-inviters/

you will see some of the colleagues in our OSLIST that are in the LIST
from the start...
and some of them are in your list of  "Our Team" such as Peggy Holman,
Village Seattle Co-Founder...

Wishing you all the best for your village project kicking off in two weeks!

Greetings from Berlin that grew out of two dozend villages...

I appreciate this invitation to post - this is my first time and have been
on the list for about 9 months.  This list for me has been a connection to
the story of Open Space beyond my own practice of it.  I have felt this
list is mainly a social tie for a community that has cultivated this
practice over the years.  I enjoy reading your posts and learning more
about the stories and history.

I hope to get to know some of you on this list somehow... maybe even
attend a WOSonOS!

Also, I just want to share that our project (VillageCo) is bringing open
space into neighborhoods throughout the US and the world as part of our
Village Gathering Model aimed at building local connections.  Our first
pilot project is launching soon https://www.villageco.org/buildersand
we have a group conducting research to help us co-learn and evolve.  Will
certainly share what we learn and what emerges!

Deeply appreciate your support, Peggy, and Michael, (and Harrison - still
with us in spirit) - we move forward from your wisdom and example.

Hi Peggy and all,

It means access to wisdom and support, and a certain culture.

Even if it was no more, for me it serves a watermark of what generosity
can be in a community of practice. Just this morning I mentioned it to a

the most experienced (in the world), sometimes within a matter of hours.
This is what impressed me from my start.

Peggy, thanks for the question!

And it is wonderful to see the names I am already familiar with and new
ones.

This list, which I have been part of for longtime now, is for me, sometimes
like candle lights and sometimes sunshine
coming from different parts of the world.

I think we should keep this light on.

Looking forward to meeting many of you in Istanbul at World Open Space on
Open Space 2024! Come and
join us to support to keep the light of Open Space Technology at least, to
strengthen and spread the light if possible.

Aitor, good luck and hold on to the principle of '' Whatever happens is the
only thing that can happen/could have happened''
This always helps me.

Hello all,

It is the first time that I write to this list, so i am not sure on
whether it will work or not, but “whatever happens is the only thing that
could happen”

Though I am new to this list, since I am exploring Open Space, I have been
following it during the last months closely!

To me so far means a place where part of the spirit of open space is, and
has been helping me getting courage, knowledge, stenght, among others!

Tomorrow I co facilitate my first Open Space in a long time, and your
comments and energy have been of great help!

I see also this list as a point of connection between practitioners,
though i believe i cannot call myself one!

Greetings from Denmark!

Thankful

Thanks, everyone who has replied so far. I hope friends old and new
continue to bring their thoughts to the conversation.

As Chris pointed
out, this list provides broad accessibility and I suspect will continue to
exist as long as it does that. And, as John suggests, new technologies
provide new ways to connect.

Appreciatively,
Peggy

I appreciate this invitation to post - this is my first time and have
been on the list for about 9 months.  This list for me has been a
connection to the story of Open Space beyond my own practice of it.  I have
felt this list is mainly a social tie for a community that has cultivated
this practice over the years.

So yes to folks finding all manner of ways to connect. And yes to the

Hi Peggy and all,

It means access to wisdom and support, and a certain culture.

Even if it was no more, for me it serves a watermark of what generosity
can be in a community of practice. Just this morning I mentioned it to a
friend – a culture where a first-timer has had reflections and stories from
the most experienced (in the world), sometimes within a matter of hours.
This is what impressed me from my start.
