What does this list mean to us now?

*"What does this list mean to us now?" *

I likened the OSL to that of the labyrinth.  Its usefulness and aliveness
comes when live bodies use it, engage it.

There was a time in my life when I would seek out labyrinths everywhere I
went. I have walked labyrinths around the world, including
Chartres Cathedral Labyrinth (France).

I love that there are labyrinths in the world. I love knowing that there is
a list of Open Space folks around the world.

These days, I am not alway consciously present to their existence, and I
know that when I follow the path of the labyrinth I always come to my
center, my core.

Open Space, over the years, has become my lived labyrinth experience. Every
opening/invitation presents an opportunity to engage, to place my live body
in space and time.

The labyrinth and the Listserv mean absolutely nothing, unless I engage it
and bring my aliveness there.

I always stand in the goodness of all of it. And all of the stuff of
whoever shows up..., whenever it starts..., whatever happens is..., and
when it's over...

This opening/invitation/question brings the listserv forth in my
consciousness.  I will listen for how I might engage.

I appreciate all those who keep the possibility alive through their
engagement.

Many blessings to you,

Rain

Hi all,

My response to Michael a few minutes ago had me reflecting on the past. I
have also been wondering about our present and future. Specifically:

What does this list mean to us now?

Particularly with Harrisonā€™s passing, I wondered what are our needs today?

When the list began in 1996, it was pretty quiet. Over the first 6 months
or so, someone posted an occasional question or story. And then, as our
numbers grew, the flood gates opened. Stories, questions, poetry, deep
dives into the principles and law, and so much more filled our inboxes for
years.  Around 41,000 messages have been sent over the last 28 years. (See
the archives https://oslist.org/empathy/list/everyone.oslist.org.) We
were there for each other, generous with our stories, willing to ask
questions and learn. For example, I did a 2,100 person Open Space in 2001
https://peggyholman.com/papers/articles/good-work-for-2100-colombian-street-kids/ just
outside Bogota, Colombia. I had the confidence to do it in part because
Harrison and Michael Pannwitz ran one that size and wrote about it on the
list.

Over the last few years, the list has been quieter. Weā€™re almost 1,800
people. That got me thinking that many may be quiet because they arenā€™t
sure of the etiquette of the list.

What would it take for anyone who wishes to do so to feel welcome to
post?

As long-time participant who has been here since the first post and wants
to see this list remain a vital resource to this world-wide community, my
thought is to put out a question that anyone here could opt to answer:

What does this list mean to you now?

I figure if enough of us respond, weā€™ll discover what the list means to us
now.

Iā€™m happy to share my answer but prefer to just put out the question for
the moment to invite anyone who cares to offer their thoughts on what they
want from this list now.

If you feel moved to offer something, it is a gift to us all.

Warmly,
Peggy

I just love the metaphors for what this list means to us!

What a great image Funda: "candle lights and sometimes sunshine coming from different parts of the world!"

And Rain: the aliveness of a labyrinth.  "Its usefulness and aliveness comes when live bodies use it, engage it."

Just wow!

So grateful to everyone who has taken a moment to reaffirm the value and beauty that that makes the OSlist continue to live for so many of us. And I am grateful to all who hang out here whether you ever post or not. We are better for having this space for ourselves and each other.

Warmly,
Peggy
