Topic annoucement: Open Space for democracy

Dear friends in Open Space
I am putting a topic on the wall for this coming Thursday Open Space Garden, the second timeslot. 17.00 (CEST).

Topic name: Open Space for protecting and strengthening the democracy.

Background: Since 2023 I have been part of organizing Open Spaces around this topic. One in September 2023 and one in April 2024. Both were 3-day conferences starting with storytelling evening one, a full day of Open Space and then half a day for actionplanning and closing.
Many actions have happened and are happening since then, including a few more open spaces both regional ones and inside organizations.

My question is if our example can inspire others to do similar or other activities? Also we still need to find ways to make it more sustainable regarding financing all the work we put into this.

I will share a bit from our work by showing the QiqoChat Space that Lucas has provided for us. We use it to gather the most important info in one space including what is happening after the conferences with action teams etc.
I look forward to seeing you next week
Thomas

Info from earlier posting here on OSLIST, by Lucas Cioffi ❤
Time 1 every Thursday: 8pm Tokyo / 7pm Beijing / 4:30pm India / 13.00 CET / 12pm London / 7am Eastern
Time 2 every Thursday: 8:30pm India / 17.00 CET / 11am Eastern / 8am Pacific

Location: https://openspace.qiqochat.com/gardens
Cost: Free!

How it Works
The "gardens" are always open.  You can even try it now.  It is a simple webpage with a picture of a garden and a "Join Video" button.  Click the button to open Zoom.

Yes, you can drop in any day and at any time, but to make it more likely that you will find someone to talk to when you are there, we're starting with two gathering times every Thursday.  Those times are shown above.

On the left side of the page, you'll see a list of gardens in different countries.  You can move to any of these gardens and join Zoom when you get there.  To let others know what you are discussing on Zoom, click the pencil and type in the topic.  People in the other gardens will see the topic change and if they are interested in it, they can bumble bee over to join you.

Very cool Thomas! I hope this is the start of something great, with people offering topics as they are moved to do so.

It is a bit like how the OSlist began. With a question posed once or twice a week eventually growing into many people bringing questions and stories.

Peggy

P.S. I would join you if I could. The first time is 4am Pacific and I have a conflict at the second time. I look forward to the session notes!

Dear Thomas and Everyone,

Yesterday, we learned that and I am proud that Prof Daron Acemoglu, a
graduate from the same high school as myself in Istanbul,
has been awarded the Nobel Prize.

In some of his works that I read and his videos I watched he defends that
Democracy and Participation is
vital for prosperity and healthy development and sustainability.

So thanks for raising this issue!
Looking forward to WOSonOS 2024 Istanbul!

Very cool Thomas! I hope this is the start of something great, with people
offering topics as they are moved to do so.

It is a bit like how the OSlist began. With a question posed once or twice
a week eventually growing into many people bringing questions and stories.

P.S. I would join you if I could. The first time is 4am Pacific and I have
a conflict at the second time. I look forward to the session notes!

Dear friends in Open Space

I am putting a topic on the wall for this coming Thursday Open Space
Garden, the second timeslot. 17.00 (CEST).

Topic name: Open Space for protecting and strengthening the democracy.

Background: Since 2023 I have been part of organizing Open Spaces around
this topic. One in September 2023 and one in April 2024. Both were 3-day
conferences starting with storytelling evening one, a full day of Open
Space and then half a day for actionplanning and closing.

Many actions have happened and are happening since then, including a few
more open spaces both regional ones and inside organizations.

My question is if our example can inspire others to do similar or other
activities? Also we still need to find ways to make it more sustainable
regarding financing all the work we put into this.

I will share a bit from our work by showing the QiqoChat Space that Lucas
has provided for us. We use it to gather the most important info in one
space including what is happening after the conferences with action teams
etc.

I look forward to seeing you next week

Thomas

Info from earlier posting here on OSLIST, by Lucas Cioffi ❤

Time 1 every Thursday: 8pm Tokyo / 7pm Beijing / 4:30pm India / 13.00
CET / 12pm London / 7am Eastern

Time 2 every Thursday: 8:30pm India / 17.00 CET / 11am Eastern / 8am
Pacific

Location: https://openspace.qiqochat.com/gardens

Cost: Free!

How it Works

The "gardens" are always open.  You can even try it now.  It is a
simple webpage with a picture of a garden and a "Join Video" button.  Click
the button to open Zoom.

Yes, you can drop in any day and at any time, but to make it more likely
that you will find someone to talk to when you are there, we're starting
with two gathering times every Thursday.  Those times are shown above.

On the left side of the page, you'll see a list of gardens in different
countries.  You can move to any of these gardens and join Zoom when you get
there.  To let others know what you are discussing on Zoom, click the
pencil and type in the topic.  People in the other gardens will see the
topic change and if they are interested in it, they can bumble bee over to
join you.

Very cool Thomas! I hope this is the start of something great, with
people offering topics as they are moved to do so.

It is a bit like how the OSlist began. With a question posed once or
twice a week eventually growing into many people bringing questions and
stories.

P.S. I would join you if I could. The first time is 4am Pacific and I

Dear Funda,

not many academics have ever been in touch with a three day os event.
Even folks facilitating os events have not been at a three day event.

There are loads of facilitators working for participation.
As an open space facilitator I have never worked for participation.
My focus has always  been on increasing time and space for the unfolding of
the force of selforganisation... and trying to be invisible and fully
present at
the same time.
Its amazing how many and perhaps all conditions folks admire rise up and
naturally show
themselves in os events: laughter, excitement, passion, learning,
working together,
unprecedented results, shared leadership/management/vision building/,
listening, effectiveness, brother- and sisterhood, enjoying conflict,
etc.
None of these were the business of the facilitator.

Now, academics, as everyone else, would be amazed. They experienced
nothing like it
in their life and work. But they do not express themselves primarily
about how amazing
they are, its natural for them, to selforganize, its just a rare
condition that is available just
a little bit more than in every day life.

At the WOSonOSes, as at every os event, sponsors should be encouraged to
have a wide
spectrum of diverse folks and opinions and ages and different positions
(elementary school kids are one of the most amazing), from different
regions of planet Earth... and have space for  friends such as rabbits,
cats, dogs, birds...sky, air, light, wind, water, sun...

Wishing you and all of you at the WOSonOS in Istanbul a ride on the
waves of the force
of selforganisation...

Greetings from Berlin

Dear Funda, not many academics have ever been in touch with a three day os event. Even folks facilitating os events have not been at a three day event. There are loads of facilitators working for participation. As an open space facilitator I have never worked for participation. My focus has always  been on increasing time and space for the unfolding of the force of selforganisation... and trying to be invisible and fully present at the same time. Its amazing how many and perhaps all conditions folks admire rise up and naturally show themselves in os events: laughter, excitement, passion, learning, working together, unprecedented results, shared leadership/management/vision building/, listening, effectiveness, brother- and sisterhood, enjoying conflict,   etc. None of these were the business of the facilitator. Now, academics, as everyone else, would be amazed. They experienced nothing like it in their life and work. But they do not express themselves primarily about how amazing they are, its natural for them, to selforganize, its just a rare condition that is available just a little bit more than in every day life. At the WOSonOSes, as at every os event, sponsors should be encouraged to have a wide spectrum of diverse folks and opinions and ages and different positions (elementary school kids are one of the most amazing), from different regions of planet Earth... and have space for  friends such as rabbits, cats, dogs, birds...sky, air, light, wind, water, sun... Wishing you and all of you at the WOSonOS in Istanbul a ride on the waves of the force of selforganisation... Yesterday, we learned that and I am proud that Prof Daron Acemoglu, a graduate from the same high school as myself in Istanbul,
has been awarded the Nobel Prize.

In some of his works that I read and his videos I watched he defends that Democracy and Participation is
vital for prosperity and healthy development and sustainability.

So thanks for raising this issue!
Looking forward to WOSonOS 2024 Istanbul!

Very cool Thomas!

Thomas

Thanks for all reactions
Just want to let you know that my sponsor/collegue/friend Kinna Skoglund will join on Thursday too. She is a well-known grassroot activist in Sweden who believes in and loves Open Space. So we teamed up – her being “the face outward” attracting people from all walks of life – and me supporting with facilitation in preps, the OST-meetings and follow-ups.
I will prepare a little design for our session, with Whole Person Process Facilitation, WPPF as a container. My plan is that we’ll start by landing together in the circle, then Kinna and I will share a bit more about our initiative incl the opportunities and issues we see. Space for questions and reflections and a closing circle. Maybe an hour will be good for our session – with possible “offsprings”.
Welcome
Thomas and Kinna
PS. Muireann, we’ll post the session notes here on OSLIST too 😊

Thank you Thomas, Peggy, Funda and Michael for this contribution!

At Open Facilitation Ireland, participation and democracy is exactly what we are aiming for! In Ireland, we are close to our politicians in that we know where they lived, can get face time with them etc but our democratic deficit is in the consultation processes. The whole systems lacks the capacity to gather input from the bottom up, even though many structures are formally in place. So we are trying to convince them to lets us help!  I don't think any of us will make the call tomorrow as we are "participating" elsewhere 😉 but we will look forward to reading about the outcomes and would love to be involved in these discussions in future!

A propos Academics, we have had some fun introducing the OS concept to academics - It turns their world of top-down education upside down! We will keep trying!

Dear Funda,

not many academics have ever been in touch with a three day os event.
Even folks facilitating os events have not been at a three day event.

There are loads of facilitators working for participation.
As an open space facilitator I have never worked for participation.
My focus has always  been on increasing time and space for the unfolding of
the force of selforganisation... and trying to be invisible and fully present at
the same time.
Its amazing how many and perhaps all conditions folks admire rise up and naturally show
themselves in os events: laughter, excitement, passion, learning, working together,
unprecedented results, shared leadership/management/vision building/, listening, effectiveness, brother- and sisterhood, enjoying conflict,  etc.
None of these were the business of the facilitator.

Now, academics, as everyone else, would be amazed. They experienced nothing like it
in their life and work. But they do not express themselves primarily about how amazing
they are, its natural for them, to selforganize, its just a rare condition that is available just
a little bit more than in every day life.

At the WOSonOSes, as at every os event, sponsors should be encouraged to have a wide
spectrum of diverse folks and opinions and ages and different positions (elementary school kids are one of the most amazing), from different regions of planet Earth... and have space for  friends such as rabbits, cats, dogs, birds...sky, air, light, wind, water, sun...

Wishing you and all of you at the WOSonOS in Istanbul a ride on the waves of the force
of selforganisation...

Greetings from Berlin

Dear Thomas and Everyone,

Yesterday, we learned that and I am proud that Prof Daron Acemoglu, a graduate from the same high school as myself in Istanbul,
has been awarded the Nobel Prize.

In some of his works that I read and his videos I watched he defends that Democracy and Participation is
vital for prosperity and healthy development and sustainability.

So thanks for raising this issue!
Looking forward to WOSonOS 2024 Istanbul!

Very cool Thomas!

Thomas

Time 1 every Thursday: 8pm Tokyo / 7pm Beijing / 4:30pm India / 13.00 CET / 12pm London / 7am Eastern

Time 2 every Thursday: 8:30pm India / 17.00 CET / 11am Eastern / 8am Pacific
