Risk assessments for open space?

Dear all,

Does anyone have any risk assessments they’ve created specifically for open
space events, that they wouldn’t mind sharing with me, please?

Or anything you could point me at online, would be super useful.

Thank you so much, and love to all.

I am neurodivergent and happy to talk about that.
If you don't hear back from me within a week, feel free to re-email me.
If you would prefer the information in this email in another format,
feel free to let me know and I'll do my best.

Hi Jenifer
Would you like to share a bit more about what you are looking for?

What comes up for me that needs to be in place, for high likelihood for success, is things like

  • Good pre-work with the sponor/-s
  • Clear theme and focus for the open space that is invited into
  • Good venue including circle, wall space and space for breakouts
  • “The right people” are invited
  • Skilled facilitator
  • A plan for follow up

The book: Open Space Technology – A User’s Guide by Harrison Owen is a good book to have guidance.

Curious!

Dear Jenifer,

I am attaching a poster from our OST Training, where we talk about when OST
is best to use - based on the recommendations from Open Space a Users Guide
by Harrison Owen. It includes that it's best not to use when leaders are
not open to outcome. Maybe this response is a bit too short, but maybe you
can share more of your context to give a more connected response.

With that shared, I am inviting everyone to join the upcoming training Working
with Open Space Technology, 3.-5. September
https://www.dorisgottlieb.com/ost-sept-2024 in the Netherlands by Thomas
Herrmann, Doris Gottlieb, and I. It would be wonderful to dive deeper into
that conversation there!

Greetings from Berlin

Dear all,

(With apologies, I'm never sure of the best way to thread a response on
this forum.)

Many thanks for the responses. I will clarify, since this might be a phrase
that is unique to British theatre.

I'm looking for documentation that addresses health & safety around the use
of open space as a system. I would also welcome any documentation on
accessibility and inclusivity in open space.

To give an example that falls into both categories: the risks for blind
people of being present in a space full of unpredictable movement, with no
clearly identified paths and with chairs and bags potentially being
anywhere on the floor, and experiencing a process where it's never really
clear who is present, because anyone who is part of a conversation could
depart at any moment without announcing that they've left.

Anna - thank you, that graphic was very helpful, even if not around risk
assessments.

Thomas - I wasn't asking about open space as a process, but it is always
good to see a very clear reminder of the things you mentioned.

Aniko - my reaching out here is me calling a session about risk assessments
:-)

Big love,

Jen x
