Dear os enthusiasts,

looking through all the open space stuff accumulated in my workspace since 1996
always happies me... today I ran into a note on OSLIST, probably late nineties while
Murli Nagasundaram at Boise State was the keeper of OSLIST... looking after our List as
Harold Shinsato is engaged in today....

Here is the ancient note:

"Join the electronic conversation
OSLIST
The global learning community of Open Space facilitators

"OSLIST" is a place where the global Open Space community of several hundred facilitators, learners and enthusiasts share materials, ideas, design, experiences, even clients. Sit in as an active listener and questioner or just a quiet learner. People on this electronic discussion list can share ideas and materials with you from their work in over 140 countries and in many languages, cultures and settings. Some have compared this to "going to an Open Space university" -- join practitioners from around the world and share in this rich and supportive learning community at:
http://listserv.boisestate.edu/archives/oslist.html"

The 5th message on December 17, 1996 sent by Murli radiates much of the spirit
our OSLIST has radiated in the last 29 years, see here

Yes! Gratitude to Murli for getting the OSlist started.

Michael, thank you for the quote from Murli. I’m amazed how accurate it still is! With all the change around us, OSLIST has been a constant. I’m grateful for that.

...wow! I have a huge wide happy grin, from ear to ear reading the origin story of this beautiful group! And the joyful grin is poking at my heart! 💕
"Open Space University", indeed! I can attest to that sentiment, and the deep learning from the diversity of comments that saw me through organising and facilitating my first OS, despite the challenges.
I've attached some feedback comments and a photo. Thank you all so much for helping make it happen the way it did.
So, next year is the big 30!
Ps.
I had another OS dream last night! This stuff goes deep.

Astronomers know that the planet Saturn has a "year" equal to approx 29.5
years for Earth. One cycle around the Sun takes that long.

The ancients who tracked this and called the planet "Chronos" - timekeeper

  • the slowest moving visible planet - had a perspective that a life can
meaningfully be understood at this timescale.

Thus 30 and 60 have been auspicious birthdays in many cultures. Saturn had
recently "returned" to the same spot (against the backdrop of the zodiac)
as when you were born. May you enjoy both in your life!

Happy Saturn return, OSLIST.

Jeff

Astronomers know that the planet Saturn has a "year" equal to approx 29.5 years for Earth. One cycle around the Sun takes that long. The ancients who tracked this and called the planet "Chronos" - timekeeper - the slowest moving visible planet - had a perspective that a life can meaningfully be understood at this timescale. Thus 30 and 60 have been auspicious birthdays in many cultures. Saturn had recently "returned" to the same spot (against the backdrop of the zodiac) as when you were born. May you enjoy both in your life! Happy Saturn return, OSLIST. Jeff

It's worth noting here, I think, that some years after Murli started the
OSLIST at Boise State, as a professor there, he had a need to go back to
India.  I think the list might have been about 10 years old at that time.

At that time, the rule was that every list hosted by the university had to
have a faculty sponsor.  Now we were losing ours.  But the OSLIST was one
of, if not THE, largest, oldest, most active list run by BSU.  So a guy
named Jack Vant, who helped run all the lists, signed himself on as our
internal sponsor, let us do our own on-list admin work, helping new members
join, cancelling repeating vacation autoreplies, and such.  That kept us
alive there for maybe another 5 years, until the university moved all of
their lists to googlegroups -- without archives.

We explored that and would have gone that way, and lost our archives, if
Harold Shinsato hadn't shown up with the skills and energy we needed to
save the archives, create a whole new list platform, and migrate 15 years
of the archives.  Also, the automatic archiving has started in 1998, but
Peggy Holman had saved every message from the first days.  So that's how
Harold had been able to make the archive more whole than it had ever been.

Early on, Julie Smith showed up and started asking a lot of previously
considered questions, with fresh new energy.  We had what I remember as two
of our most active and insight-rich two months or so.  Dozens of people
chimed in on many of those questions.  Chris Corrigan and I sorted those
threads out, and wove the tangle of overlapping quoted messages into
something you could actually read straight through.  We called it the
User's Non-Guide, but Harrison always ended up calling it the Non-User's
Guide.  Here's the link if you care to visit or revisit that fun.
https://michaelherman.com/publications/ost_nonguide.pdf

Finally, in the category of "be prepared to be surprised," I don't think
I'd ever given Boise Idaho a single thought in my life until Murli showed
up with the shiny new listserv... but today, maybe because I sent too many
messages to the list... I actually live about two miles from where this
list was born and grew up.  Along the way, I got to personally thank Jack
for saving our list and share a bit of what we've actually been up to
here.  So that was fun.

Thanks to all for keeping it, and keeping us, going!

MH

I might as well admit now that I had no idea BOISE was a place - I thought
it was some of acronym involving Open & Space but never quite working out
what the B, I & E stood for. I never asked for fear of exposing my

save the archives, create a whole new list platform, and migrate 15 years
of the archives.

MH

Dear os enthusiasts,

looking through all the open space stuff accumulated  in my workspace
since 1996
always happies me... today I ran into a note on OSLIST, probably late
nineties while
Murli Nagasundaram at Boise State was the keeper of OSLIST... looking
after our List as
Harold Shinsato is engaged in today....

Here is the ancient note:

"Join the electronic conversation
OSLIST
The global learning community of Open Space facilitators

"OSLIST" is a place where the global Open Space community of several
hundred facilitators, learners and enthusiasts share materials, ideas,
design, experiences, even clients. Sit in as an active listener and
questioner or just a quiet learner. People on this electronic discussion
list can share ideas and materials with you from their work in over 140
countries and in many languages, cultures and settings. Some have compared
this to "going to an Open Space university" -- join practitioners from
around the world and share in this rich and supportive learning community
at:
http://listserv.boisestate.edu/archives/oslist.html"

The 5th message on December 17, 1996 sent by Murli radiates much of the
spirit
our OSLIST has radiated in the last 29 years, see here

I might as well admit now that I had no idea BOISE was a place - I thought it was some of acronym involving Open & Space but never quite working out what the B, I & E stood for. I never asked for fear of exposing my ignorance. :-/ Jon ___________________________ Jon Harvey activist | adviser | author ambition | imagination | transformation | magic 01280 812711 he/his On Sat, 8 Feb 2025, 02:21 Michael Herman, <michael@michaelherman.com> wrote: > It's worth noting here, I think, that some years after Murli started the > OSLIST at Boise State, as a professor there, he had a need to go back to > India.
