opening space for life force

Dear friends and colleagues,
Choosing to share with you some text that I am including in my current
update of the Genuine Contact module Working with Open Space Technology
workbook:
"The best facilitators of OST make a regular practice of opening space
within themselves. Think of this as opening space for life force. They
understand that they are in a process within life that requires curiosity
and creativity. They look at what is happening now, at what's new, what's
come into my life. From this comes the understanding that what's new points
the way to new options for living and taking leadership for one's life.

A primary task is to open to what is new. A related primary task is to keep
the space within oneself open to allowing the new to have life beyond the
moment. The third related primary task is to be open to new patterns,
allowing the breaking of old patterns.

Loss happens when space is made, when patterns are broken. Loss is
accompanied by grief and often, conflict, inner conflict. It is helpful in
the personal journey of developing oneself to have understanding loss,
grief, and the healing work of grief that accompanies opening space. The
path to this understanding comes about through the discipline of opening
space within oneself.

When I open space within myself as I embrace whatever is new, what is
showing up is exhilarating and I feel enhanced life force flowing. At some
point, either immediately or weeks later, I realize that keeping myself
open to how this new creation is unfolding requires me to let go of who I
was before this new world opened up to me. I balance the new flow of life
force and creativity with my grief work as I let go of old patterns.

From the self awareness of what it is to open space within oneself, keep it
open, and allowing the breaking of old patterns, personal development can
be transformative. The facilitator of OST develops greater capacity to
understand what is involved when space is opened in the organization. The
understanding extends to keeping the space open for the new life to thrive,
and to what is involved when old patterns need to be broken."

Dear Birgit,

reading your notes I realize that I am not part of the best facilitators
because I
never opened space in myself.
My assumption is that space is open without end.
And I also assumed that control is the number one
enemy of the force of selforganization knowing that
control can never close space in toto.
And I assumed that ost events expand
space for the unfolding of the forces of selforganization.

Well, I havent facilitated since 2012.
Maybe I am one of the old patterns.

Have a great day and have a look at WOSonOS 2025 in Kenya

Cheers from Berlin

Dear Birgit,

PS:
Back in 2006 at the 14th Annual International Open Space on Open Space
(today we call it
Worldwide Open Space on Open Space, WOSonOS) in Moscow something
appeared to
block us in one of our circles.

Raffi Aftandalian or another puzzled soul such as Micha Pronin or Funda
Oral or Gail West or Thomas Herrmann or Brian Bainsbridge... got up and
asked you, as one of our most senior facilitators, to re-energize us.

You fell back to one of the oldest of the old patterns and asked all of
us to get up, stand behind our chairs and rearrange our circle to actually
the old pattern:
A perfect circle.

All of us got up and in a few minutes re-created the old pattern out of
the chaotic and energy laden pattern to "re energize" our gathering.

This utterly simple intervention stunned me and reminded me that observed
data of the situation was the basis for this intervention. And a bunch
of experience.

Dear Birgitt and Michael,

As one of those forever "puzzled" souls I hear both of you. What you have
written make sense to me.

Actually our work (as a facilitator of OST) is to prepare and protect
conditions where people come together and
find whatever they need : food, love, freedom, trust, attention,
understanding (in fact basic needs we always have).

  • Just some notes from my thoughts:
  • Control stops the Freedom to grow. Yet some people need Control to
    feel Safe.
  • The invitation plays a critical role, we expect that people who come
around the circle are grown up and conscious of their choice to be
there....is the space Safe for everybody in this case?
  • We as facilitators, can we provide a Safe Space?
  • Do we need Control or More Freedom to make space safe?
  • What does Safe Space mean? Does it mean the same thing everywhere in
    the world?

Let it Be, Trust the Life or Take Responsibility? If yes, How? Are we grown
ups or are we children? Do we need education or
rules?

Have a great Week!
Funda, from somewhere between East and West.

Dear friends and colleagues,
Choosing to share with you some text that I am including in my current
update of the Genuine Contact module Working with Open Space Technology
workbook:
"The best facilitators of OST make a regular practice of opening space
within themselves. Think of this as opening space for life force. They
understand that they are in a process within life that requires curiosity
and creativity. They look at what is happening now, at what's new, what's
come into my life. From this comes the understanding that what's new
points the way to new options for living and taking leadership for one's
life.

A primary task is to open to what is new. A related primary task is to
keep the space within oneself open to allowing the new to have life beyond
the moment.

From the self awareness of what it is to open space within oneself, keep
it open, and allowing the breaking of old patterns, personal development
can be transformative. The facilitator of OST develops greater capacity to
understand what is involved when space is opened in the organization. The
understanding extends to keeping the space open for the new life to thrive,
and to what is involved when old patterns need to be broken."

Dear Birgitt and Michael, As one of those forever "puzzled" souls I hear both of you. What you have written make sense to me. Actually our work (as a facilitator of OST) is to prepare and protect conditions where people come together and find whatever they need : food, love, freedom, trust, attention, understanding (in fact basic needs we always have). - Just some notes from my thoughts: - Control stops the Freedom to grow. Yet some people need Control to feel Safe. - The invitation plays a critical role, we expect that people who come around the circle are grown up and conscious of their choice to be there....is the space Safe for everybody in this case? - We as facilitators, can we provide a Safe Space? - Do we need Control or More Freedom to make space safe? - What does Safe Space mean? Does it mean the same thing everywhere in the world? Let it Be, Trust the Life or Take Responsibility? If yes, How? Are we grown ups or are we children? Do we need education or rules? Have a great Week! Funda, from somewhere between East and West. The space opens up when you accept Loss or Life as it is. Change is
inevitable. Change endangers Safety, and can result in Conflict. I agree
that Personal Journey and Facilitating the OST are somehow related. Also it
is important that our Client sees that this
can not keep going with old patterns and be ready to embrace Change....

However the Leaders are reluctant to lose their Power and embrace Change
and open the doors to see what does Life bring to them?
I think when the Host and the Client are collaborative OST can lead to
miracles. Otherwise we might destroy many thing and
don't enjoy any relation (Human, with Nature, Working, Family etc)

When I open space within myself as I embrace whatever is new, what is

That was indeed a beautiful intervention that made a deep impression in me.
I’ve done it several times since then when it happens that the circle is scattered at the end of an OST or other facilitation in circle.
Suuuuch a difference in energy for the closing circle

Thanks for reminding me/us
Thomas

Dear Birgit,

PS:
Back in 2006 at the 14th Annual International Open Space on Open Space (today we call it
Worldwide Open Space on Open Space, WOSonOS) in Moscow something appeared to
block us in one of our circles.

Raffi Aftandalian or another puzzled soul such as Micha Pronin or Funda Oral or Gail West or Thomas Herrmann or Brian Bainsbridge... got up and
asked you, as one of our most senior facilitators, to re-energize us.

And a bunch of experience.

Dear Birgit,

reading your notes I realize that I am not part of the best facilitators because I
never opened space in myself.

Dear friends and colleagues,
Choosing to share with you some text that I am including in my current update of the Genuine Contact module Working with Open Space Technology workbook:
"The best facilitators of OST make a regular practice of opening space within themselves. Think of this as opening space for life force. They understand that they are in a process within life that requires curiosity and creativity. They look at what is happening now, at what's new, what's come into my life. From this comes the understanding that what's new points the way to new options for living and taking leadership for one's life.

A primary task is to open to what is new. A related primary task is to keep the space within oneself open to allowing the new to have life beyond the moment. The third related primary task is to be open to new patterns, allowing the breaking of old patterns.

Loss happens when space is made, when patterns are broken. Loss is accompanied by grief and often, conflict, inner conflict. It is helpful in the personal journey of developing oneself to have understanding loss, grief, and the healing work of grief that accompanies opening space. The path to this understanding comes about through the discipline of opening space within oneself.

When I open space within myself as I embrace whatever is new, what is showing up is exhilarating and I feel enhanced life force flowing. At some point, either immediately or weeks later, I realize that keeping myself open to how this new creation is unfolding requires me to let go of who I was before this new world opened up to me. I balance the new flow of life force and creativity with my grief work as I let go of old patterns.

From the self awareness of what it is to open space within oneself, keep it open, and allowing the breaking of old patterns, personal development can be transformative. The facilitator of OST develops greater capacity to understand what is involved when space is opened in the organization. The understanding extends to keeping the space open for the new life to thrive, and to what is involved when old patterns need to be broken."
