I got a message from Ethelyn Owen, Harrison’s widow, with this link from the New York Times. She said check out #5.

Harrison used to talk of reaching a time when OST was just the way people operated. Through this article, it looks like a bit of the magic made it into the mainstream. I believe we each continue to support that evolution with every space we open, small or large.

How to silence the doubts
In “Some Assembly Required: A Journal of My Son’s First Son https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/305113/some-assembly-required-by-anne-lamott-with-sam-lamott/,” the writer Anne Lamott surveys the scene of her family doting on her new grandson at the funeral of her beloved uncle Millard:
I was reminded of the Four Immutable Laws of the Spirit: Whoever is present are the right people. Whenever it begins is the right time. Whatever happens is the only thing that could have happened. And when it’s over, it’s over.
Each one of these “laws,” originally http://elementaleducation.com/wp-content/uploads/temp/OpenSpaceTechnology--UsersGuide.pdf coined by the organizational consultant Harrison Owen, seems worth internalizing as a means of quieting our constantly harping minds that tend to insist that everything is wrong — what’s happening, when it’s happening, whom it’s happening to or with. While things may not be perfect, they are, more often than not, pretty much OK.

Anne Lamott’s statement was puzzling (and slightly disappointing) in that
she was reminded of the “Four Immutable Laws of the Spirit” - using proper
nouns as if those “laws” were named by someone other than Harrison. I
wonder who introduced them to her in that way.
Thankfully the author of the NYT article gave attribution to Harrison.
Lamott’s disrespect is most definitely outweighed by the naming of the
principles and It’s definitely uplifting to see the principles popularized
in such a widely-read publication.

I am detecting some possible confusion between the four principles of OST
and the “Four Immutable Laws of Spirit” attributed to Angeles Arrien.
I believe those (the latter) are different statements.
Perhaps something along the lines of:

Harrison actually mentions Angeles Arrien’s 4-Fold Way in a shortened form in Open Space Technology: A User’s Guide. It's on page 60 of the 3rd Edition and page 48 in the original edition. Oddly, Harrison splits the first statement into two and misses the second entirely.
Show up
Be present
Tell the truth
Let it all go
On a different note, I had a conversation with Angie once and asked her about a reframing I proposed for the third statement:
Tell the truth with compassion.
She thought about it for a moment and said it worked. I have a bias towards it because it speaks to what TO do rather than what NOT to do.

The site doesn’t make it easy to get to the story if you’re not a subscriber so I’ve copied the relevant section below.

Gratitude from me, too, Peggy.
As said before — the to do instead of not to do.
And also:
I’ve worked on „without blame or judgement“ since over a decade and I must admit.
I keep failing in regard to the absoluteness of it and finding myself judging—very little compared to former years, but still on occasion.
To all:
Very useful for me has been the following phrase, which can be applied to a whole variety of topics:
I don’t … except sometimes.
I don’t … (tell my truth judgementally) … except sometimes.
Works well with „eat lots of chocolate“, „scroll through YouTube shorts“, …
Insert your personal favourite!

Anne Lamott’s statement was puzzling (and slightly disappointing) in that she was reminded of the “Four Immutable Laws of the Spirit” - using proper nouns as if those “laws” were named by someone other than Harrison. I wonder who introduced them to her in that way.
Thankfully the author of the NYT article gave attribution to Harrison.
Lamott’s disrespect is most definitely outweighed by the naming of the principles and It’s definitely uplifting to see the principles popularized in such a widely-read publication.
