Dear all, and happy new year.

Below is a link to an experiment in "walking open space" I am involved with
in the UK, beginning in January. I'll paste the description here with the
link at the end to the full thing.

I am interested to know if anyone has done something like this before and
what your experiences were...

Join us for an Intelligence Walk...

Our thinking often flows most effectively when we move our feet. I love to
walk by the sea in my home city of Brighton in the UK. Currently I am
thinking most about intelligence, especially within the context of the rise
of Artificial Intelligence.

What is natural intelligence and how does it relate to artificial
intelligence (AI)?

How do we develop our own intelligence and what are its unique role and
value ? Indeed, does our natural intelligence have unique value at all in
the world of rising AI?

How is our intelligence being impacted, even changed by AI?

How is our intelligence superior or inferior to AI and does that matter?

What are the risks and opportunities afforded by AI?

How do we meet the emergence of generative AI?

If you live in Brighton or nearby in the UK, join me for one of my seaside
walks. Every two weeks during 2024, I will be creating the regular rhythm
of a seaside walk, starting at Brighton’s Pier and heading either east or
west.

East will take us to Rottingdean with a halfway cafe stop at Ovingdean
Beach, ending at Molly’s, the lovely cafe in Rottingdean (home of the cream
tea).

West takes us to the Brighton Eye before ending at the Flour Pot on First
Avenue.

Each walk will be based on an invitational theme (posted here). There is no
charge. We might explore intelligence, AI and consciousness, Generative AI
and our kids, how AI can help or harm the business world. AI and human
health. AI and the quest for meaning and purpose. If the topic draws you
in, then join us for that walk.

There will be plenty of opportunity to take the conversation wherever you
want.

We will set out, stop halfway and then come together for final discussion,
reflection and lookahead at our destination cafe. A chance to share
intelligence and wisdom, questions and insight using the flow of a walk (Or
a roll if you are in a wheelchair).

We will use a simple, minimal method to organise our conversation. It is
called Open Space Technology.

We meet together before we set out, having decided to join the walk because
the overall topic invite interests us. Then we’ll invite anyone present to
join us on the way to explore a specific aspect of that topic – a further
theme, question, challenge, whatever we want to explore.

Then we set off. There may be people walking on their own because they are
the only one exploring that aspect of the topic. We may walk in pairs or in
a small group. Go where your energy takes you. Follow your feet or your
nose.

We come together at the halfway point, grab a cuppa and there is a chance
to issue new invitations for walking conversation. So, there are two rounds
of conversation. There can be more for whoever joins us on the way back.

We arrive at our final destination and join together to share the results
of our various conversations. So we begin with an informal opening circle
where we introduce ourselves and whoever wants to can offer an invite to a
walking conversation with them. We set off towards our halfway point,
revisit the emerging agenda and then head off to our final destination
before ending in our closing circle. We create the agenda together. We
self-organise the conversation.

You might notice this happens and it is fine if it does. Whenever it starts
is the right time. Whoever comes are the right people. Whatever happens,
happens. Wherever it happens is the right place. And be mobile – step in,
step away, move to wherever you need to be at any time. That is the essence
of open space,

I look forward to seeing you on one of our Intelligence Walks.

Paul Levy

If the weather is bad the walk is not cancelled. But full details will
appear here and we will announce the end destination cafe anyway.

Dates for the year will appear here. Here is the first one…

When: Wednesday 17th January 2024, 9am, finish at 11am

Where: Meet at the Brighton Pier entrance

Theme: What is happening or needs to happen at the threshold of human and

Dear Paul,

Dear all,

A happy and healthy New Year as well!

An interesting project which you post below, thank you Paul!

Using your link to "intelligent walks" I happened to have the German translation tool on.

As this has to do with (a rather simple kind of) artificial intelligence I enclose a screenshot out of the translation.

Not by artificial, but by my own choice, the part with the 4 principles (BTW a remarkably proper translation).

Reading your proposition I was thinking:

Interesting; and how to know about the outcome of the walk?

So, if you wish, maybe you like to spread the word of outcome exceeding Brighton walks?

Very simple and short smartphone-video sequences at your closing round would do well.

But still, what will happen is the only thing that could happen in the very moment.

All the best!

Gunther
