Every week: Open Space Gardens (online) Thursday 13.00 CET (8pm Tokyo) and 17.00 CET (11am Eastern)

Thanks to the encouragement of Rijon "Ryan" Erickson, Jeff Aitken, Muireann
Ni Sheanlaoich, Thomas Herrmann, and Paul Levy, we'll try gathering in the
Open Space Gardens every Thursday at two times:

Time 1 every Thursday: 8pm Tokyo / 7pm Beijing / 4:30pm India / 13.00 CET
/ 12pm London / 7am Eastern
Time 2* every Thursday**:* 8:30pm India / 17.00 CET / 11am Eastern / 8am
Pacific

Location: https://openspace.qiqochat.com/gardens
Cost: Free!

How it Works
The "gardens" are always open.  You can even try it now.  It is a
simple webpage with a picture of a garden and a "Join Video" button.  Click
the button to open Zoom.

Yes, you can drop in any day and at any time, but to make it more likely
that you will find someone to talk to when you are there, we're starting
with two gathering times every Thursday.  Those times are shown above.

On the left side of the page, you'll see a list of gardens in different
countries.  You can move to any of these gardens and join Zoom when you get
there.  To let others know what you are discussing on Zoom, click the
pencil and type in the topic.  People in the other gardens will see the
topic change and if they are interested in it, they can bumble bee over to
join you.

Who will facilitate?
I will try to be there for the first few, but I invite anyone to help think
about how we can make this an easy process that runs without a
facilitator.  In my opinion, the way to make this work the best, is to only
use the main room (the central garden) as a place to do introductions and
to let everyone say what their topic is.  Then all the conversations can
happen in the other gardens.  If the conversation starts in the central
garden, then most people will probably stay there, and it won't be as
engaging (in my opinion).  What do you think?  Let's think about ways to
make this simple and easy (and awesome!)

Make the space our own
Each garden has a photo and its own Zoom link.  If you have a beautiful
photo of a garden in your country, I would be happy to display it in the
list of gardens.  Please email it to me (or reply to everyone if you like)
so we can learn more about where everyone lives and our beautiful world.

The origin of this idea
Credit for the idea goes to two leading lights in the OS community: Suzanne
Daigle and Michael Herman.  During the pandemic they were inspired and
thought of an online space that members of this community can drop into
24/7 to have a conversation.

Tech notes

  1. We are using free Zoom accounts in there right now, so if your
conversation ends after 40 minutes, click the "Join Video" button again.
You will see the timer counting down for the final 10 minutes of the call
so you are not surprised.  If people like this idea of the gardens, we can
collect donations and put some paid Zoom accounts in there.

  2. When someone clicks "Join Video" the system shows a red camera image
like the one below.  One problem is that we don't know when people leave
Zoom, so we display that camera image for 60 minutes or until they open
Zoom in a different garden.  So, sometimes it looks like people are on
Zoom, but they are not on Zoom anymore.

Questions or Suggestions?
Please feel free to let everyone know what you think.  How can we make this
better?

Thanks so much Lucas for facilitating the space yesterday and going forward.

As we also discussed, it is possible to put topics up in advance that someone might want to discuss!

On another note, my colleague is trying to join this list but with no success. Can someone here (an admin) help us?

Hi Muireann,

It was great to meet you yesterday in the Open Space Gardens
https://openspace.qiqochat.com/gardens!

I like your suggestion of letting people post topics ahead of time, so I
added this to the welcome note that people see when they arrive:

You can post topics a few days before Thursday, and you can also post
topics when you arrive on Thursday.  Here's how to do that... if you are
signed in, enter one of the gardens and then click the pencil.  You can
then set the topic for that room.  Change the topic as the conversation
moves to new topics.  Clear out your topic when it's over.  Most
importantly, have some fun!

To answer your second question (about how a colleague can join the OSLIST),
here are the instructions that I found from the Open Space World Website
https://openspaceworld.org/wp2/oslist/#:~:text=Join%20the%20OSLIST,-Via%20web%20form&text=To%20subscribe%20by%20email%2C%20send,that%20and%20you're%20IN!

I hope you have a great weekend!

Hi Lucas,

Thanks so much for your continued generosity. I hope the Thursday sessions prove fruitful for those wanting to connect and see each other!

What a great tangible outcome of posing the question.

I continue to be touched by reading what this list means to people. It sure affirms its existence serves a variety of purposes for the community of Open Space practitioners.

So glad to be connected.

Warmly,
Peggy

Yes, you can drop in any day and at any time, but to make it more likely that you will find someone to talk to when you are there, we're starting with two gathering times every Thursday.  Those times are shown above.

On the left side of the page, you'll see a list of gardens in different countries.  You can move to any of these gardens and join Zoom when you get there.  To let others know what you are discussing on Zoom, click the pencil and type in the topic.  People in the other gardens will see the topic change and if they are interested in it, they can bumble bee over to join you.

Who will facilitate?
I will try to be there for the first few, but I invite anyone to help think about how we can make this an easy process that runs without a facilitator.  In my opinion, the way to make this work the best, is to only use the main room (the central garden) as a place to do introductions and to let everyone say what their topic is.  Then all the conversations can happen in the other gardens.  If the conversation starts in the central garden, then most people will probably stay there, and it won't be as engaging (in my opinion).  What do you think?  Let's think about ways to make this simple and easy (and awesome!)

Make the space our own
Each garden has a photo and its own Zoom link.  If you have a beautiful photo of a garden in your country, I would be happy to display it in the list of gardens.  Please email it to me (or reply to everyone if you like) so we can learn more about where everyone lives and our beautiful world.

The origin of this idea
Credit for the idea goes to two leading lights in the OS community: Suzanne Daigle and Michael Herman.  During the pandemic they were inspired and thought of an online space that members of this community can drop into 24/7 to have a conversation.

Tech notes

  1. We are using free Zoom accounts in there right now, so if your conversation ends after 40 minutes, click the "Join Video" button again.  You will see the timer counting down for the final 10 minutes of the call so you are not surprised.  If people like this idea of the gardens, we can collect donations and put some paid Zoom accounts in there.

  2. When someone clicks "Join Video" the system shows a red camera image like the one below.  One problem is that we don't know when people leave Zoom, so we display that camera image for 60 minutes or until they open Zoom in a different garden.  So, sometimes it looks like people are on Zoom, but they are not on Zoom anymore.

Hi Lucas, Thanks so much for your continued generosity. I hope the Thursday sessions prove fruitful for those wanting to connect and see each other! What a great tangible outcome of posing the question. I continue to be touched by reading what this list means to people. Ämne: [OSList] Open Space Gardens — two times every Thursday at 13.00 CET (8pm Tokyo) and 17.00 CET (11am Eastern)

Dear Open Space Community,

This is a reminder that each of you is invited to drop into the Open Space Gardens (Zoom) every Thursday.
The details are below...

I hope to see you there!
Lucas Cioffi

This email was originally sent on Sep 13, 2024:

Thanks to the encouragement of Rijon "Ryan" Erickson, Jeff Aitken, Muireann Ni Sheanlaoich, Thomas Herrmann, and Paul Levy, we'll try gathering in the Open Space Gardens every Thursday at two times:

Time 1 every Thursday: 8pm Tokyo / 7pm Beijing / 4:30pm India / 13.00 CET / 12pm London / 7am Eastern
Time 2 every Thursday: 8:30pm India / 17.00 CET / 11am Eastern / 8am Pacific

Location: https://openspace.qiqochat.com/gardens
Cost: Free!

How it Works
The "gardens" are always open.  You can even try it now.  It is a simple webpage with a picture of a garden and a "Join Video" button.  Click the button to open Zoom.

Hello all.  I really appreciate the effort that has been made to initiate
these Open Space Garden sessions.  Has there been any discussion about the
timing of these sessions?  I would not dream of asking you to change it
just for me.  But it just happens that I already had a recurring meeting at
this same day/time on Thursday mornings.  If the Open Space Gardens could
be just about any other day/time, I would be very interested to
participate.  Please let me know if there is any discussion of alternative
days/times for these sessions.
Thank you!

Hi John
As I understand Lucas's offer, the Garden is a continuous Open Space. I will do my best to join you if you make an offer / space!
Best regards,

Hello all.  I really appreciate the effort that has been made to initiate these Open Space Garden sessions.  Has there been any discussion about the timing of these sessions?  I would not dream of asking you to change it just for me.  But it just happens that I already had a recurring meeting at this same day/time on Thursday mornings.  If the Open Space Gardens could be just about any other day/time, I would be very interested to participate.  Please let me know if there is any discussion of alternative days/times for these sessions.
Thank you!

I may or may not make it to the next few gatherings, but i've posted the invitation to the OS LinkedIn group.  And... I invite anyone who attends on any Thursday to post News from the Gardens, here on the List and also as comments on the Gardens Invitation post at LinkedIn.
