Dear friends and colleagues,
you might recall a note from me a few weeks ago about the newest of the
three books about Facilitating with Stories. The first was The Story
Cookbook, the second was Making Sense of Stories: an Inquirer's Compendium;
and the newly released one is Facilitating with Stories: Ethics, Reflective
Practice and Philosophies. I highly recommend these books to you. Andrew
Rixon and Cathryn Lloyd were the editors of two of them, Andrew Rixon and
Geoff Hill were editors for one. They're in Australia. I met Andrew through
OST many years ago. This is a great body of work about stories.
The four online book launch events included presentations by the authors
about their chapters and are very informative. There are recordings on zoom
for three of the four sessions. They are available for one week only. See
links in the email below from Andrew.

Facilitating with Stories: Ethics, Reflective Practice and Philosophies
(2022) https://www.cambridgescholars.com/product/978-1-5275-8829-5
This book provides a rich connection between theory and practice for those
seeking to work with stories in organisational, community, educative or
coaching settings.
Making Sense of Stories: An Inquirers Compendium (2021)
https://www.cambridgescholars.com/product/978-1-5275-6587-6
An essential companion to the Story Cookbook, this book provides a rich
array of ways to analyse stories for researchers and consultants.
Dear Birgitt,
thank you so much for sharing these links!
I have just listened to one of the sessions - and have enjoyed it a lot.
I have also checked in with the publisher to see, if there could be a bit
longer time to listen to the other chapters, including the one you wrote
Birgitt together with Rachel “Exploring the Ethics of Working with Stories
within Organizations”- as this is offline already. I will let you know if I
hear back from the publishers with prolonged access to the zoom recordings.
I found the conversation with Sara Branch and Louisa Whettam with “Creating
a Safe Space for Stories: The Role of Process and Space when Facilitating
the Safe Ethical Use of Stories” very interesting. They offer a great
reminder, of why we always have a closing circle in an Open Space and Whole
Person Process Facilitated meetings - and a reminder of what happens if you
don't.
I also enjoyed their practical tips on how to work with energy in the room
by providing fidgets, breaks, and movements to help participants to stay
centered, and integrate their learning and emotions. With their sharing,
they help me find more words and perspective - again - to explain why I am
making certain facilitation choices in order to work with the energy in the
room.
This conversation's focus is an exploration of the concept of a safe space.
I prefer to create a life-nourishing space because I cannot provide a safe
space. On the notion of the Ethics of Story Sharing it might not even be
ethical to try to create a safe space.
But I believe it is mandatory to help my sponsors create Ethics for
Storysharing for working with stories in their organization/ context.
My practice is based on the way Birgitt and Rachel have written about in
the chapter of the book Facilitating with Stories “Exploring the Ethics of
Working with Stories within Organizations”. It allows my clients to work
with stories in an ethical way and therefore creates a life nourishing
environment of maximum choice, freedom, and leadership of each individual
involved as well as the whole group and the organization when sharing
stories and later working with the data from the stories.
I hope your zoom call recording will be available again. so I can listen to
your sharing, too.
I hope many people will benefit from this book!
