Global WOSONOS

HO

Recent discussion here about the location of WOSONOS set me to thinking.
Our annual gathering has moved around the world from Moscow to Aussieland,
stopovers in Chile and Iceland, and more.... Marvelous. Then came the
plague and for three years nothing nowhere. Now it seems like we are back
in business -- Berlin next year... Back to normal, so to speak.

In the meantime, and thanks to the plague, we have developed some deep
experience with virtual Open Space, most recently with the Peace and High
Performance "gathering" which always took place in New York, but this year
happened in (I think ) 15 countries with 80+ participants. Very different
from the prior experiences at International House but powerful and rich.

All of which brings me to the odd thought: Why go back to normal? Why not
build on our plague generated experience and create a Hybrid WOSONOS with
multiple sites and virtual connections. Simultaneously Gerardo and friends
could host a gathering in Italy, Harold Shinsato could open some space in
the USA, Christine might do the same from Paris...  And everybody around
the world would have the choice -- going to a place of their choosing and
or joining anywhere around the world.

Could be massively enriching -- and possibly a dress rehearsal for my hoped
for conversation with 8,000,000,000 people around the world. Now that would
really be some good open space.

What do you say, Folks. It is all doable!

I love the idea of going hybrid with WOSonOS.
Having multiple gatherings around the world - including in-person WOSonOs
for those that can make it would be a nice experiment and a great step
ahead of the 8 billion conversations around the world about the world.

Such a fabulous idea!

I will be on the road then, camping with truck and trailer in tow.
Somewhere in the Western woods of the USA. What fun to imagine connecting
from there to different parts of the world! Also very doable!

Performance "gathering" which always took place in New York, but this year
happened in (I think ) 15 countries with 80+ participants. Very different
from the prior experiences at International House but powerful and rich.

All of which brings me to the odd thought: Why go back to normal? Why
not build on our plague generated experience and create a
Hybrid WOSONOS with multiple sites and virtual connections. Simultaneously
Gerardo and friends could host a gathering in Italy, Harold Shinsato could
open some space in the USA, Christine might do the same from Paris...  And
everybody around the world would have the choice -- going to a place of
their choosing and or joining anywhere around the world.

Could be massively enriching -- and possibly a dress rehearsal for my
hoped for conversation with 8,000,000,000 people around the world. Now that
would really be some good open space.

What do you say, Folks. It is all doable!

Harrison

Ian -- Just an historical note. While I agree, Open Space in the flesh is
delightful, however the 1st Open Space (1985) was  Hybrid. Wasn't planned
that way. Just sort of happened. In that ancient time, Internet didn't
exist -- but its precursor DARPA NET did, courtesy of the USARMY. A
number of us out there in Monterey were part of a weird  Army/Civilian
organization called the Delta Force -- Celebrated on screen in the movie
"Men who stare at goats." As our Open Space progressed we thought to bring
in our friends and colleagues  from around the world... Europe, Japan,
Korea etc. It wasn't a massive number of people (10-15?) but they got
hooked -- and a most remarkable thing happened -- All of our conference in
Monterey went on Global Time 24/7. There was not a moment over the 3 days
that something wasn't happening. Pretty wild for that ancient time!

Dear Open Space enthusiasts near and far away,

folks or family visiting at birthdays, sitting around the christmas
tree, neighbors walking by, people at the bus stop and in the bus,
parents having an eye on their kids on the playground, folks on vacation
on a wonderful island, a group of friends sitting at a table in a
restaurant, couples watching Television... many of them neither present
nor absent in  a mode of perpetually holding on to a gadget being in
touch with the entire world and everyone...

Gathering in Open Space in the flesh or virtual or in other variations,
all have their right to exist.
Engaging in all at the same time (one group in a real life setting and
other individuals or groups in virtual contact engaged in virtual space
and other manifestations) is less than half the enchilada. Especially a
mode that os facilitators abhor trying their best to be totally present
and invisible at the same time...

Prerequisites for the unfolding of the the force of selforganisation are
a burning issue, a hypercomplex situation, high diversity in the group
of participants, an urgent need of results since yesterday, challenges
that nobody by themselve has an answer to. Those prerequisites are also
necessary for an action orienting Open Space on Open Space taking 16
hours spread over 3 days with two nights of sleep.
In getting projects on the road that grew in the 3 days, especially
globally connected ones, need every tool available for managing the
project, no question...

Regarding the venues for OSonOS events: In the years 2009 through 2017,
regional "Learning Exchanges" were convened in the OSonOS mode in the
years in which WOSonOS took place OUTSIDE of Europe.
We met in France/Paris in 2009, then in Italy/Sardinia 2011, in
Holland/Utrecht in 2013, Spain/San Sebastian in 2016 and Iceland in
2017. These events were grand for folks that would not travel by plane
or had limited resources or ...
In the face of climate change and other threats this kind of
"regionalisation" might be the music of the future, ongoing wherever
folks feel the time for an OSonOS has come in their neighborhood.
And the WOSonOS no longer in the flesh but global in whatever way.

Greetings from Berlin from an expert colleague that has never been in an
online event or in a video conference or in the possesion of a cell
phone (well, this year, my kids forced their 83 year old father to carry
a cell phone to make calls and a few of them have my cell phone number,
no one else) eagerly awaits his third WOSonOS in Berlin in the flesh in
a relaxed mode...

Love and Peace and Health
mmp

PS: Just remembered that I did experience the hybrid variant at the 11th
WOSonOS in Sweden/Denmark in 2003... I was stunned by the amount of
effort and time invested in the online part and how busy folks were with
being connected worldwide... it was then and there that the hybridphobia
caught me...

me to thinking. Our annual gathering has moved around the
world from Moscow to Aussieland, stopovers in Chile and
Iceland, and more.... Marvelous. Then came the plague and
for three years nothing nowhere. Now it seems like we are
back in business -- Berlin next year... Back to normal, so
         to speak.

In the meantime, and thanks to the plague, we have
developed some deep experience with virtual Open Space,
most recently with the Peace and High Performance
"gathering" which always took place in New York, but this
year happened in (I think ) 15 countries with 80+
participants. Very different from the prior experiences at
International House but powerful and rich.

All of which brings me to the odd thought: Why go back to
normal? Why not build on our plague generated experience
and create a Hybrid WOSONOS with multiple sites and
virtual connections. Simultaneously Gerardo and friends
could host a gathering in Italy, Harold Shinsato could
open some space in the USA, Christine might do the same
from Paris...  And everybody around the world would have
the choice -- going to a place of their choosing and or
         joining anywhere around the world.

Could be massively enriching -- and possibly a dress
rehearsal for my hoped for conversation with 8,000,000,000
people around the world. Now that would really be some
         good open space.

Dear Open Space enthusiasts near and far away, folks or family visiting at birthdays, sitting around the christmas tree, neighbors walking by, people at the bus stop and in the bus, parents having an eye on their kids on the playground, folks on vacation on a wonderful island, a group of friends sitting at a table in a restaurant, couples watching Television... many of them neither present nor absent in  a mode of perpetually holding on to a gadget being in touch with the entire world and everyone... Gathering in Open Space in the flesh or virtual or in other variations, all have their right to exist. Engaging in all at the same time (one group in a real life setting and other individuals or groups in virtual contact engaged in virtual space and other manifestations) is less than half the enchilada. Especially a mode that os facilitators abhor trying their best to be totally present and invisible at the same time... Prerequisites for the unfolding of the the force of selforganisation are a burning issue, a hypercomplex situation, high diversity in the group of participants, an urgent need of results since yesterday, challenges that nobody by themselve has an answer to. Those prerequisites are also necessary for an action orienting Open Space on Open Space taking 16 hours spread over 3 days with two nights of sleep. In getting projects on the road that grew in the 3 days, especially globally connected ones, need every tool available for managing the project, no question... Regarding the venues for OSonOS events: In the years 2009 through 2017, regional "Learning Exchanges" were convened in the OSonOS mode in the years in which WOSonOS took place OUTSIDE of Europe. We met in France/Paris in 2009, then in Italy/Sardinia 2011, in Holland/Utrecht in 2013, Spain/San Sebastian in 2016 and Iceland in 2017. These events were grand for folks that would not travel by plane or had limited resources or ... In the face of climate change and other threats this kind of "regionalisation" might be the music of the future, ongoing wherever folks feel the time for an OSonOS has come in their neighborhood. And the WOSonOS no longer in the flesh but global in whatever way. Greetings from Berlin from an expert colleague that has never been in an online event or in a video conference or in the possesion of a cell phone (well, this year, my kids forced their 83 year old father to carry a cell phone to make calls and a few of them have my cell phone number, no one else) eagerly awaits his third WOSonOS in Berlin in the flesh in a relaxed mode... Love and Peace and Health mmp PS: Just remembered that I did experience the hybrid variant at the 11th WOSonOS in Sweden/Denmark in 2003... I was stunned by the amount of effort and time invested in the online part and how busy folks were with being connected worldwide... it was then and there that the hybridphobia caught me... here are the notes from osonos 10 (marysville) and osonos 11 (swenmark)
from where all the notes were posted online, at the same moment that they
were posted on the wall at each venue.  some lively discussion took place
online in both cases, including after the events finished.

https://openspaceworld.org/cgi/netwiki.cgi?OSonOSinSwenMark

https://openspaceworld.org/cgi/oldwiki.cgi?MarysvilleAustralia

these would have been very different if we'd had zoom back then 2002 and
2003.

we did this with wiki at the time, as google docs was also not yet
invented.  today, this sort of globally shared documenting could happen
easily in a google doc rather than a wiki.

somewhere between a single physical location and hybrid with online
participation everywhere, there is a multi-(but few)-sites option:  one
space per continent, perhaps.  each one still an exciting gathering of
people from all over (mostly nearer than very far, but anyone could
continent-hop if they wanted to).  the sites could all contribute to a
shared doc... thanks too google... and be linked together, with many
individuals, via zoom... and, of course, qiqochat.  wouldn't have to be
limited to three sides of the globe, but that would seem to be the minimum
number of sites required to effectively encircle the globe.  maybe each
physical location would set aside one breakout space where folks could
check in with other locations and individuals online.  that might simply be
a "new and improved" "global hive" of the newsroom that we're already used
to finding at any multi-day OS gathering. where all the notes are being
typed directly to a globally shared doc, the three (or more) newsrooms are
all on shared zoom, and all kinds of buzzing and fluttering participants
might connect and eddy into various online breakout spaces.  .

to the earlier oslist conversation about repeating in europe, this year and
potentially next year... what if we didn't delay europe next year, but
added an asian and an american location to it?  three terrestrial gathering
points around the globe/clock, one online always-open coffee bar, and one
world-around community and a single online proceedings document?

Today we also have wonderful AI empowered on the fly translation services,
people in one online session could all be speaking different languages and
get a translated text transcript on the fly as subtitles. The AI transcript
service is not perfect and has a hard time understanding some accents and
some smaller languages, but dose a pretty good job anyway.

I have also noticed some wonderful text to speech programs that can give
you answers on the fly, like Alexa, Googo, and I don't know all their names
of these talking home devices. I wonder if somome has implemented them to
act as the UN translation services team. It could really help comment
across the different languages.

One though on multi site multi time conversation is the model of parallel
conversation on the same topic. World wide parallel breakouts are quite
possible with the use of reports and feedbacks where interested people
across the globe in different languages can "fork" a topic posted and
conven a forked breakout. Each topic can thus have multiple discussion
times online and offline at a multiple locations and in multiple languages,
if a good and supporting online topic posting and news wall systems would
be in place that supports such forking. Than after the many discussion we
can merge the reports of the many groups and give an instant summary and
structure to each report with help of our wonderful language models and
translation tools available online.

I do recommend that such report translations are read over by a language
facilitator where that person can give clear direction to the AI models
about any translation errors to be corrected on the fly.

This will probably not be ready for this years Wosonos. And I don't know
who would be working on fitting together something like this right now. But
I can't believe that this will not be the reality of online Open Space in a
couple of years.

Hello all, building on those ideas. Hybrid and More! In an “and and” sort
of way!

Imagining if we could have: Open Space happening “au naturel” in the spirit
of “Engaging 8 Billion People in Meaningful Conversations” as Harrison
invites us to do.

Open Space happening everywhere and anywhere, in all shapes and forms. No
big fuss or fanfare, just an opening of space over the same time frame.
With us inviting and facilitating, formally OR informally with a heightened
awareness and great intention over that time period.

Yes it can happen on line too. So much less work now with QiqoChat. And in
tandem with Berlin, what a wonder if there were other gatherings happening
then too. With for the Open Space community of facilitators and hosts to
drop in photos and written summaries in a living Book of Proceedings. To
capture the moments happening all over the world in a very special way. No
one working too hard, as Harrison would say.

This week is International Happiness Fest week. Our dear friend Luis
Gallardo and team are opening all kinds of spaces, face to face in Miami,
on line and in person with hundreds of agoras “gatherings” happening in
small and large groups all over the world. Luis and folks are kindred
spirits with us. At WOSonOS in Washington and at International House.
Their big goal is “10 Billion people Happy by 2050”. Like us, theirs is
serious work covering all facets of life, with a focus on all the systems
breaking down and the need to invite new narratives and new ways of “being
and doing”.

Here for those who may want to take a peak and/or join in. I’ll be opening
space in Miami on the final day.
